Hon. Ernest Owusu Ntim, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Atiwa East District, has taken decisive steps to tackle the hazards posed by abandoned mining pits in the district. In line with his manifesto commitment to the people of Atiwa East, the DCE has commissioned a dedicated task force, including members of the security services, to enforce compliance by local miners and ensure all abandoned mining pits are safely covered and repurposed.
This initiative has received strong backing from traditional authorities, the local council of churches, and all relevant stakeholders. It has been one of his central focuses of Hon. Owusu Ntim’s familiarization tour across the district in 2025, consistently highlighting the need to transform dangerous mining sites into safe and productive spaces.

“The safety of our communities is paramount,” Hon. Ernest Owusu Ntim said. “Abandoned mining pits have long been death traps. Our task force operating with a proposed module operande but in-compliance with the rules and regulation governing mining activities will ensure that, they are properly covered and reshaped for other beneficial uses, protecting lives and supporting community development.”
The Atiwa East District Assembly has partnered closely with local media such as JoyNews, the Information Services Department (ISD), and others, to monitor and report progress, ensuring transparency and keeping the public informed. Already, several mining pits previously considered hazardous have been safely covered and reshaped, opening up possibilities for alternative community uses, including the implementation of 24-hour policies and other local development projects.
This bold initiative underscores the District Assembly’s commitment to sustainable development, public safety, and effective governance, demonstrating how strategic leadership and collaboration with stakeholders can turn environmental hazards into opportunities for community growth.
The Information Services Department (ISD) being the eyes and ears at the grass root of every district assembly is committed to report every progress of the district assembly’s activities and update residence.
