The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is a nationwide examination conducted in Ghana at the end of Junior High School (JHS). It serves as the main assessment that determines students’ eligibility for placement into Senior High Schools (SHS), technical institutes, and vocational schools.

Organized by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the BECE evaluates students in core and elective subjects such as English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science, Social Studies, and others depending on their study track, and is usually written over a period of several days across designated centres throughout the country.

On Monday 4th April, 2026, around 7:30am, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Atiwa East, Hon. Ernest Owusu Ntim, together with his team including the District Coordinating Director Mr. Paul Acquah, and the District Director of Education, Ms. Lionel Pearl Acquah, has toured selected Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) centres across the district to motivate candidates as they begin their examinations.

The visit, which marked the commencement of this year’s BECE for Junior High School candidates nationwide, covered three major examination centres: Presby Junior School, Islamic DA Basic School, and Moseaso DA Basic School.

At each centre, the delegation engaged candidates briefly, urging them to remain calm, confident, and disciplined throughout the examination period. Hon. Ernest Owusu Ntim encouraged the students to give their best, assuring them that the district leadership remains committed to supporting education and rewarding excellence.

In his address, the DCE announced a special incentive scheme, promising that outstanding BECE candidates from the district would be awarded secondary school educational support packages. He emphasized that the initiative is aimed at motivating students to strive for academic excellence and to ease the transition into senior high school.

The Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Abena Osei Asare, also through her representative, reiterated ongoing government support for BECE candidates. She highlighted recent interventions including the distribution of examination materials such as mathematical sets and other learning tools. She further noted the provision of a free square meal to all candidates across examination centres to support their well-being during the examination period.

Officials from the Information Services Department, acting as the government’s communication link at the grassroots level, were present during the tour to observe and document proceedings. The department also confirmed the commitments made by the MP’s representative and indicated that updates regarding the promised secondary school support packages for top-performing students will be communicated in due course.

The joint visit by the district leadership and education authorities was widely seen as a morale booster for candidates as they embark on one of the most important academic assessments in their basic education journey
