The Atiwa East District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) on Wednesday, 13th May 2026, organized a civic engagement programme for students and staff of Akyem Sekyere SDA Senior High School at the school’s Assembly Hall. The programme formed part of activities under the “Civic Engagements on the Rule of Law and the Fight Against Corruption” initiative being implemented by the NCCE.

The engagement sought to educate students on ethical leadership, accountability, transparency, conflict of interest, and the importance of respecting the rule of law in promoting national development and fighting corruption in Ghana.

Addressing participants at the programme, the Atiwa East District Director of the NCCE, Saviour Ametefe, emphasized the need for young people to uphold integrity and become responsible citizens in their schools and communities. He noted that corruption remains one of the major challenges affecting development and called on students to cultivate honesty, discipline, and accountability in their daily activities.

Mr. Ametefe explained that civic responsibility begins with small actions such as respecting school rules, avoiding examination malpractice, protecting public property, and speaking against wrongdoing. He further encouraged students to actively participate in Civic Education Club activities in order to deepen their understanding of democratic governance and responsible citizenship.

Also speaking at the programme was Joseph Agbeko, the Atiwa East District Director of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ). He educated students on human rights, ethical leadership, and the dangers of influence peddling and abuse of office. He stressed that every citizen, regardless of status, is equal before the law and must respect the laws of the country.

Mr. Agbeko further highlighted the importance of the Whistleblower Act and encouraged participants to report corruption and unethical practices through lawful channels. According to him, young people have a crucial role to play in safeguarding the future of Ghana by promoting transparency and accountability in society.

The programme was coordinated and organized by Rita Nyantekyi, a Head of Department at the school, who also addressed participants on leadership and life after Senior High School. In her presentation, Madam Rita Nyantekyi encouraged students to remain focused, disciplined, and determined in pursuing their goals after completing SHS education.

She advised students to develop positive attitudes, good moral values, and leadership qualities that would prepare them for tertiary education, employment, and responsible adulthood. She further urged them to avoid negative peer pressure and make decisions that would positively shape their future careers and personal lives.

The programme featured interactive discussions and question-and-answer sessions, during which students shared their views on corruption, leadership, and responsible citizenship. Participants expressed appreciation to the NCCE and CHRAJ for the educational engagement and called for more civic education programmes in schools.

The event was attended by staff and students of Akyem Sekyere SDA Senior High School, as well as members of the school’s Civic Education Club. The engagement formed part of broader efforts by the NCCE to empower the youth with knowledge and values necessary for strengthening democracy, accountability, and integrity in Ghana.
