On the date of March 28th, 2024, Atiwa East district assembly inaugurated unit committee and area councils as part of the effort toward transparency and accountability in local governance.The event witnessed the district chief executive in the person Hon. Kwabena Panin Nkansah, the district coordinating director in the person of Shakil Kpedau Mahamood, the district police commander in the person of DSP Raymond Iddrisu Mahama, the presiding member in the person of Mr. Abraham Nyarko, the district director for education Miss Pearl Lionel Aquah, the district health director Miss Effua Afful, chiefs and queen mothers, heads of department, all assembly members and unit their unit committees from all over the district, family and friends.Speaking at the event was the DCE, Hon Kwabena Panin Nkansah clearly making emphasis on both the duties of the unit committee and area council members in accordance to the Local Government, Urban, Zonal, Town Council and Unit Committee establishment instrument 2010, LI 1967, which was second to the expressing his overwhelming gratitude to everyone present to at the event.The DCE said, the district assembly may assign to the unit committee within its area of authority such powers of enforcement of any bye-laws enacted by the Assembly as the assembly may consider fit. He added, the unit committee is there to collaborate with the district assembly in revenue generation with the district.The DCE also made emphasis on unit committee assisting town council to enumerate and keep records of all ratable persons and properties with the district, mobilizing and monitoring members in the implementation of self-help developmental projects. In addition, the unit committee is to provide a focal point for discussion of local problems and take remedial action where necessary or make recommendation to the assembly where appropriate through the relevant urban, zonal or town councils. To the area council members, have the mandate to prepare an annual budget for revenue and recurrent of developmental budget for approval from the district assembly. For this function was strategically given to the area council to reduce the workload on the department of budget and to enhance in revenue generation for the district and for the nation as well.He continued to say that, the area council members have the mandate to project a short- or medium-term development projects with the council and guidance from the department of planning, but needs to be approved by the district assembly first before implementation. For this and many more the event witnessed from DCE presentation.Speaking again at the event was the presiding member, Mr. Abraham Kofi Nyarko, assembly member for tiawia-subriso electoral area at Kedewaso area council, after the event witnessed a swearing-in of 16-unit committees follow by area council members for which was moderated by the Hon. District Chief Executive and the head of Administration in the person of Mr. Wallis Nkansah.The Presiding member, explicitly reminding the authority invested on the DCE by His excellency Nana Addo-Dankwa Akuffu Addo, the president for the Repulic of Ghana to inaugurate unit all elected committee and area council members. He continues to edge them to immediately assume their duties as specified by the law, and also to remember the very oath they have sworn today when executing their duties as specified by the law. Finally, he said the district assembly is and will be here to assist them in any way they can toward a better future of Atiwa East District.
