World AIDS DAY celebration in Ayimam.The event commenced with a radio discussion on OM Radio, where health professionals addressed key HIV-related topics, including misconceptions, prevention strategies, and the importance of early detection. Community health nurses also extended awareness efforts to churches, mosques, and local community centers. School education programs were organized to equip students with knowledge about HIV prevention, responsible sexual behavior, and the importance of testing.Additionally, facility-based education sessions were held in local health centers, providing valuable information on HIV care, counseling, and treatment options. These sessions included community durbars and small group engagements to foster open discussions.Grand Finale: Health Walk & HIV Screening and TestingThe celebration climaxed on December 3, 2024, in Anyinam Township, with a vibrant health walk and rally featuring community members, government officials, and healthcare personnel. Key activities included:• A public awareness float displaying banners and posters with HIV prevention messages.• Free distribution of condoms and education on their correct use to promote safer sexual practices.• Aerobics sessions and fitness challenges to encourage a healthy lifestyle.• Free HIV testing and health screening, where health officers provided counseling and referrals for medical support.Challenges & Way ForwardDespite the event’s success, challenges such as stigma-related reluctance to testing and limited resources for outreach to remote areas were observed. Moving forward, the District Health Directorate aims to expand community-based education, strengthen partnerships with media for continuous sensitization, and provide sustained HIV testing and counseling services.The 2024 World AIDS Day celebration reinforced the district’s commitment to ending HIV/AIDS through education, prevention, and accessible healthcare. By working together, the community can take significant steps toward reducing new infections and eliminating stigma, ensuring that “Ending AIDS Together” becomes a reality.
