In a major step toward improving efficiency and embracing modern governance, Atiwa East District Assembly has officially begun its transition from a paper-based system to a fully digital, paperless platform. This transformation marks a significant milestone in the Assembly’s journey towards smarter, faster, and more transparent public service delivery.
For many years, the Assembly relied heavily on paper for official correspondence and record keeping. Letters, memos, reports, and files filled offices and corridors, often making document retrieval a slow and tedious process. Communication between departments required physical file transfers that could take days, and the costs associated with printing, filing, and storage continued to escalate, which hindered effective administration and the operation of the Assembly internally.
Recognizing the need for change, the Atiwa East District Assembly has now adopted the SMART Workstation Platform, a digital tool designed to revolutionize how official business is conducted. The platform allows documents to be created, shared, and approved electronically, eliminating unnecessary paperwork and improving coordination across departments.
As part of this new initiative, officers from the Office of the Head of the Local Government Service (OHLGS) in the person of Bernard Akita Agyei and Joshua Makatui Cudjue, and ERCC Joseph Darku, visited the district on Monday, 3rd October 2025, to engage with staff and train them on how to effectively utilize the full capabilities of the SMART Workstation. The interactive session, held at the District Assembly Hall, brought together heads of departments, administrative officers, and technical staff, including other agencies or departments such as the Information Services Department (ISD), eager to understand the platform’s features and benefits.
Speaking at the opening session, the District Coordinating Director in the person of Mr. Paul Acquah, and on behalf of the DCE, Hon Ernest Owusu Ntim, commended the OHLGS team for their support and highlighted the importance of the digital transition. “This marks a turning point in how we work as a local government institution. Going digital will not only save us time and resources but will also enhance accountability, transparency, and responsiveness to the needs of our people,” he noted.

The OHLGS officers demonstrated key functions of the SMART Workstation, including document creation and tracking, electronic approvals, real-time communication, and secure digital storage. Participants were also guided through best practices for managing digital workflows to ensure data security and efficient information management.
Staff members expressed enthusiasm about the new system, noting that it would significantly reduce administrative bottlenecks and improve service delivery. “We are excited about this change. It will make our work faster and more organized,” one participant said.

By adopting a paperless approach, the Atiwa East District Assembly joins the growing list of local government institutions across Ghana embracing technology to enhance performance and sustainability. The transition supports the national digitalization agenda and underscores the Assembly’s commitment to innovation and improved public service.
The successful introduction of the SMART Workstation platform represents more than just a technological upgrade — it is a reaffirmation of the Assembly’s dedication to efficient governance, environmental sustainability, and improved service delivery for the people it serves.
