On the 6th of December, 2023, Atiwa East District Assembly was blessed by officials from the National Association of Local Authority of Ghana (NALAG) with the purpose of sensitizing all staff on gender equality for which is one of the most recent topics discussed worldwide.
NALAG believes that there is a significant inequality balance when it comes to the area of working places and relevant places. For this rises issues on discrimination, insecurity, sexual harassment, organization and administrative barrier and so on. To minimize or to eradicate completely the gender inequality, there is a need sensitize all public institutions and relevant private institutions.
The District Chief Executive in the person of Honorable Kwabena Panin Nkansah welcome the officials from NALAG, and staff for adhering to the call and coming in their numbers. He edged all staff to pay very attention to whatever the officials have for the district assembly and to take note of them for this is one of the most sensitive issues arising in the world now.
According to NALAG statistics on gender inequality at some selected places reveals generally that, most of the higher positions in the public institutions here in Ghana are occupied by males as compare to the females, and that there is a significant advantage to men than women. Base on this, there have been rises of issues on discrimination, insecurity, sexual harassment, organization and administrative barrier, and many more.
NALAG proposed that, there should be sexual harassment policy, strengthen the gender unit, Revisiting posting married women close to their families or spouse, to design and implement extensive gender sensitization programs and many more.
Opportunity was given to the staff in groups on how to enhance gender equality in MMDA’s and each of the groups were given a platform to make presentation. Some of the finding were allocating a room for breeding mothers to take care of their children when needed during work premises, equipping gender department with the necessary tools to work effectively especially sensitization of gender equality, equal balance in committees, implementation of sexual harassment policies at the district level, anti-discriminating policies and others.
